Why is it that women are frequently stereotyped as bad drivers, yet "lady driven" is frequently used as a selling point in used car ads? I personally don't subscribe to either viewpoint, but it seems silly that they could coexist, no?

I've never heard of "Lady" driven, but elderly and mechanics get a good reputation because they usually either a) don't drive very often or b ) drive very slowly and carefully.

It just so happens that a lot of elderly selling cars are women or something, there's a stereotype about old lady drivers only driving 10-30 miles a month, so that's where it comes from I believe.

Ye', the old adage 'one lady owner' is still often said.

I think somebody posted a CL ad on here like yesterday that said "lady driven". I'll try and find it.

I couldn't find the specific ad I was referring to, but it's definitely a term that's used, and if you google search "lady driven" you will find a number of amusing forum posts discussing the topic.

It really means nothing, poor maintenence will happen no matter which gender. The only stereotype that I somewhat believe in is the grandma car and even that can backfire. It can mean either the car has REALLY low miles or the car has been crashed into every single thing in the parking lot. Luckily it would be quite easy to tell which is the case.

Mechanic owned is a plus? If the upkeep is too much for him/her and he/she is trying to get out from under it...

My late Grandma was one of the more aggressive drivers I've ever known. If you'd call her on it, she'd remind you that she doesn't have much time left on this planet and she sure as hell isn't going to waste it going 55. :)
